Our team is HAM Certified

Superstition Search and Rescue (SSAR) Goes to Amateur Radio.

In search and rescue operations, communication is critical. Coordinating search teams, arranging transport and requesting additional resources are basic needs that can’t be met using standard communications. Moreover, critical decisions involving emergency resources require a communications technology that is reliable and trusted. As such,  11 members of Superstition Search and Rescue, a Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) just completed their training and are now HAM licensed to better assist our community and the State Emergency Services when needed.

We are now working on a Emergency Communications (EmComm) Network and looking into a repeater and will soon offer our services to The Amateur Radio Emergency Service® (ARES) which consists of licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment, for communications duty when a disaster strikes. Our goal is to have a well-trained team that can respond to all disasters while maintaining communication with all state emergency services and resources. This is all possible, and quite easy, using HAM radios.
Our main SSAR Frequency doesn’t require a HAM license so you can listen and talk without violating Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules. However, for a wider range of frequencies, and more advanced communication techniques involving some of the more powerful equipment – you must become a licensed HAM radio operator.

Additionally, being a licensed HAM radio operator allows you to listen to and communicate with people from all over the world.
HAM Radio has been tested and proven in several disasters throughout the world. When all other communications were down – HAM radio operators were talking. There are currently 44,000 amateur operators registered in Arizona so if you want to know what’s going on during an emergency, get trained.
